Laboral City of Culture

Works and projects

Since its opening in March 2007, new spaces have been added to the educational, cultural and leisure options on offer at La Laboral. The Laboral Tower was re-opened to the public in July 2007, after extensive interior and exterior refurbishment and its adaptation to current sign-posting and safety requirements. Its marvellous vantage points on the 14th and 17th floors provide tourists and visitors with magnificent views of La Laboral’s surroundings. That same month, July 2007, the administration and management office run by the company RECREA also became part of the uses and services at this great complex.

In October 2007, La Laboral City of Culture experienced one of the greatest milestones of this new era after the opening of the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation, namely, the inauguration of the new La Laboral Theatre. After over two year’s work, the old Universidad Laboral Assembly Hall – enlarged, refurbished and renovated – has now become a theatre-auditorium, which is noteworthy for its stage capacity and its possibilities as a congress centre, given its ability to seat a total of nearly 2,000 people, distributed over several rooms.

Over the forthcoming months, new pieces will be added to the tourist-cultural attractions of a city that is in constant change: the newly recovered historical gardens, the Gijón Conservatory of Music, the mini-flats for students and artists, not to mention a five-star hotel.
